  Lewis Notches Runner-Up Finish

 in Copper World Classic...

By Chris Knight

PHOENIX, AZ (January 18, 2006) - -Noblesville, Indiana’s Michael Lewis arrived in Phoenix International Raceway last weekend as one of the pre-race favorites for the 29th Annual “Copper World Classic” and for good reason: he’s a previous champion of the event.   Back in 2001, Lewis hailed to victory in one of the most competitive “Copper World Classics” on record; he was looking to recapture that crown last Sunday.

Early in the weekend, Michael proved to the entire United States Auto Club why he was a threat for the event after setting the fast time during practice.  “I’m really happy with the way the car is handling,” Michael Lewis, who pilots the No. 40 for Western Speed Racing.  “We have a great setup underneath the car and I think we have a definite shot at the pole.”

The team opted not to make any adjustments to their machine heading into time trials, as they were confident they had enough for the pole position.  In qualifying, Lewis turned a lap of 26.605 seconds good enough for third place behind fellow competitors and friends Dave Steele and Bobby East.  “I think not making any adjustments really hurt us,” explained Michael following the session.  “Both Dave and Bobby picked up during their qualifying runs and that pretty much halted our efforts for a pole.  Still, I am happy with where we qualified, and we’ll just have to go out there and try to win the event.”

After taking the green flag, Lewis quickly began his battle towards the lead.  But, both Steele and East weren’t going to give Michael an inch, keeping him at bay in third for most of the 25-lap feature.

On lap 14, while leading Bobby East had a severe mechanical failure which sent his machine hard into the wall between turns three and four.  With East’s misfortunate Michael climbed to second.

On the restart, Michael tried to maneuver his way past Florida ’s Dave Steele, but even a couple of late race opportunities wouldn’t be enough with Michael crossing the line second behind Steele.  “The handling was a little off, but I just really didn’t have anything for Dave.  He was good. Congratulations to him on the victory.  I guess if we couldn’t win the thing, a second place isn’t that bad.  I want to thank my Western Speed Racing team for their hard efforts this weekend; we’ve started our season off in the right direction.”

Michael’s teammate Billy Wease finished sixth in his No. 80 Western Speed Racing machine after starting alongside Michael thanks to a solid fourth place qualifying effort.

Western Speed Racing, Performance Trailers, Go Fast Sports, Red Line Oil, Team ASE, Hoosier Tire, Esslinger Engineering, ASA Speed Truck Challenge, and Loy Loy Restaurant all served as sponsors on Lewis’s No. 40 last weekend.  “We had a good finish for our sponsors, and that’s important,” continued Lewis.  “I’m sorry we couldn’t get them into victory lane on Sunday, but to start off the season on the right foot is what leads to more victories and eventually wins championships, we’ll be in victory lane plenty this season, I have a good feeling about it.”

Exiting Phoenix International Raceway, Michael Lewis stands second overall in both USAC National Midget Car Series Standings and USAC Western Midget Car Series Standings just a mere five markers from leader Dave Steele.  “It’s really early in the season, but this was one of my best finishes in the Copper World Classic since 2001, so I think I’m ahead of the game heading into the next race,” he said.

The National Midget Car Series is idle until May while the Western Midget Car Series resumes March 25 at the Bakersfield ( California ) Speedway .

Currently, Lewis plans to stay put in the USAC ranks while continuing to see if other racing opportunities fall in place.  I would like to go back into the NASCAR Busch Series or join the ARCA RE/MAX Series this season,” added Lewis.  But, I don’t have anything definite plans in the future, just people trying to help me get there.  My main focus right now is here in the USAC series with Western Speed Racing, if something else develops we’ll worry about it then. I have a job to do and that’s what I plan on doing.”

Michael Lewis Returns to Phoenix; Eyeing Another Win...

By Chris Knight

PHOENIX, AZ (January 18, 2006) - -As the United States Auto Club heads to Phoenix International Raceway this weekend, Michael Lewis is preparing himself to start the 2006 season off with a victory in Sunday’s 29th annual “Copper World Classic.”  The event also features the USAC Silver Crown Championship Series, plus NASCAR Autolite Elite Division SW Series and NASCAR Grand National Division West Series competition.

Lewis, hailing from Noblesville , Indiana is no stranger to victory lane in the event as the Western Speed Racing driver eased his way to triumph back in 2001.  “I’m really looking forward to this weekend,” said Michael.  “We had a pretty good year in 2005 but there’s always room for improvement.  Another win in this event on Sunday would be a great way to officially start the racing season.”

Indeed, the 2003 USAC Western States Sprint Car Champion has an incredible 2005 season.  In just 28 races, he captured three fast times, qualified 16 times in the top-five, hustled to six wins, an astounding eleven top-five finishes and capturing 20 top-ten runs. Lewis also captured the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the season in the USAC National Midget Series.  “When you really look at the stats, it looks good, but I’m a winner and a champion. I’ve proved that.  We had a lot of wins sneak away from us last year, I’ve got a good team behind me and we’re looking for no mercy this season.

Western Speed Racing, Performance Trailers, Team ASE, Hoosier Tire, Esslinger Engineering, ASA Speed Truck Challenge, and Loy Loy Restaurant, and will all serve as sponsors on Lewis’s No. 40 this weekend.  “It’s great that a lot of our sponsors from last year are back,” continued Lewis.  “Again, our focus is winning this event and I know it would be huge for all our sponsors if they saw us start the season in victory lane.”

As for the Phoenix International Raceway (PIR), Lewis is a fan of the track.  “The racing at Phoenix is great.  There’s a lot of room to pass, it’s wide and tight at the same time.  It’s one of the best tracks I think we race on and I’m looking forward to getting on the track this weekend.”

Following Phoenix ’s event, Lewis plans to stay put in the USAC ranks while continuing to see if other racing opportunities fall in place.  I would like to go back into the NASCAR Busch Series or ARCA RE/MAX Series this season,” added Lewis.  But, I don’t have anything definite plans in the future, just people trying to help me get there.  My main focus right now is here in the USAC series with Western Speed Racing, if something else develops we’ll worry about it then. I have a job to do and that’s what I plan on doing.”

Michael Lewis Collects Top-Ten Finishes in Orlando...

By Chris Knight

ORLANDO , Fla (December 05, 2005) - - Noblesville , Indiana’s Michael Lewis wasn’t sure what to expect in this past Friday’s “Mopar-PRI Sprint & Midget Classic”.  A new race and a new track meant some certain unknowns for the Western Speed Racing team.  However, the team’s mentality remained the same, victory lane.

The United States Auto Club (USAC) held time trials efforts on Thursday, December 1st in preparation for the first annual “Mopar-PRI Sprint & Midget Classic”, a special addition to the 53rd annual Performance Racing Industry trade show.  Michael was slated to compete in both the midget and sprint car events driving the No. 40 Western Speed Racing machine.

Lewis qualified 12th in his No. 40 Western Speed machine with a time of 13.471 seconds in the midget series, while Michael pulled together a fast lap of 13.590 seconds in the sprint series good enough for 13th on the starting grid.  By qualifying inside the top-14 Thursday evening, Lewis didn’t have to participate in Friday’s “last chance” event for the main attraction.  “We didn’t qualify as well as we would have liked to, but at least we made the events on time,” said Michael Lewis, the 2002 winner of the “Turkey Night Grand Prix at Irwindale , California .

In the first event Friday night, Lewis started 12th and patiently remained there for a majority of the 40-lap session.  As the event began to wind down, Lewis began his march towards the front.  The lack of ability to pass and some handling issues forced Michael to only gain three positions during the midget event, despite an intense and exciting battle with Darren Hagen with Michael unable to pass him and settling for ninth.  “I just couldn’t pass.  This track is really one of the hardest tracks I have ever had to pass on, so to get a top-ten finish, I am satisfied, but not really happy.”

With one top-ten finish under his belt, Lewis was heading into the sprint car event looking to improve on his qualifying effort.  At the start of the event, Lewis again used patience while trying to proceed to the front in the event officials called “one of the most competitive of the year”.  Michael, who won his first USAC Western States Sprint Car Championship in 2003, narrowly avoided disaster when a spinning machine in front of him nearly took him out of contention.

Despite not being a threat to the dominating Dave Steele, Lewis was able to break into the top-ten and stayed there, garnishing him two top-ten finishes Friday evening. “Again, I can’t say I am really happy with the finish, but it looks good on paper.  I just couldn’t get the car working the way I needed to and passing is pretty much impossible.  You either have to pass them on the start or restart or if someone in front of you has a problem. I hate it for the team, but I appreciate their hard work this weekend.”

Western Speed Racing, Wirtgen Group America , Hoosier Tire, Esslinger Engineering,  ASA Speed Truck Challenge, Loy Loy Restaurant, and Performance Trailers all served as sponsors on Lewis’s No. 40 in both series.  “I just want to thank all of our sponsors for their support this year.  We had a good year, but of course, we’ll head into the new season looking to surpass this year’s stats.”

As the 2005 year officially comes to a close, Michael Lewis has recorded stellar stats.  In just 28 races, he captured three fast times, qualified 16 times in the top-five, hustled to six wins, an astounding eleven top-five finishes and capturing 20 top-ten runs. Lewis also captured the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the season in the USAC National Midget Series.

Next weekend, Michael will head to Covington , Kentucky in early December where he has been invited as a guest to attend the 53rd annual ARCA RE/MAX Series banquet.  “I’m really excited about heading to the banquet.  It will be a chance to meet some people, and see up close what the series is all about.  We’re working on some opportunities that could have me racing in a few ARCA events in 2006,” Lewis said.

Following the holiday season, Lewis plans to regroup and plan ahead for the 2006 racing season. Michael Lewis would like to begin a winning and long-lasting career in the stock car industry while continuing to race in the USAC ranks.

Michael Lewis Qualifies Solidly for USAC Midget & Sprint Events in Orlando...

By Chris Knight

ORLANDO , Fla. (12-02-2005) - - Noblesville, Indiana native Michael Lewis qualified solidly for both the Sprint and Midget series in preparation for Friday night’s First Annual “Mopar-PRI Sprint & Midget Classic” at Orlando Speedway in Orlando, Florida.

Lewis qualified 12th in his No. 40 Western Speed machine with a time of 13.471 seconds in the midget series, while Michael pulled together a fast lap of 13.590 seconds in the sprint series good enough for 13th on the starting grid.  By qualifying inside the top-14 Thursday evening, Lewis won’t have to participate in Friday’s “last chance” event for Friday’s main attraction in conjunction with the Performance Racing Industry trade show located for the first time in Orlando this year.

“We qualified for the main features on time and that’s important,” said Michael Lewis.  “But, the cars are not just as fast as I would like them to be.  I just can’t get the cars to handle right. I have full confidence in my racing crew and I’m sure by the time the races roll around, we’ll be good to go.”

For the first time in his career, Michael will compete at Orlando Speedway.  “The track is tricky, that’s for sure,” explained one of most upcoming young-guns in Motorsports.  “It’s really hard to get a grip and it’s a little bit difficult on the handling.  However, just like any other track, the more time you get on the racing surface, you adapt and catch on.”

It’s a big weekend for the Western Speed team as one of the most respected teams on the USAC tour will have three drivers competing in the Midget Series event.  Teammates Billy Wease (No. 80) and Bobby Santos, III (No. 60) sandwiched Lewis, as they qualified 11th and 13th respectively.   “It would be great to have a 1-2-3 finish for our Western Speed team on Friday night.  There are a lot of people putting on this show and with other drivers like Tracy Hines, Bobby East, Dave Steele and Josh Wise all expected to be fast, we’re looking to make the most noise on Friday with a good finish for Rick (Gerhardt, owner).”

Bobby Santos, III posted the 15th fastest lap in the Sprint car series which will force the driver of the No. 60 Western Speed machine to compete in the “final chance” event.  If everything goes as planned, Santos , III will join Lewis for the Sprint car event putting two entries for Western Speed Racing in the 40 lap main feature.

Western Speed Racing, Wirtgen Group America , Hoosier Tire, Esslinger Engineering, Loy Loy Restaurant, MPH Enterprises, ASA Speed Truck Challenge and Performance Trailers will all serve as sponsors on Lewis’s No. 40 in both series.  “I just want to thank all of our sponsors for their support especially in this new event this weekend.  We have our goals set high, but I know we can achieve them. We just need a little luck and the wins are ours.”

As the 2005 year draws to a close, Michael Lewis has recorded stellar stats.  In just 24 races, he captured three fast times, qualified 15 times in the top-five, hustled to six wins, an astounding eleven top-five finishes and an amazing 16 top-ten runs.   Lewis also captured the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the season in the USAC National Midget Series.

Following this weekend, Michael will head to Covington , Kentucky in early December where he has been invited as a guest to attend the 53rd annual ARCA RE/MAX Series banquet.  “I’m really excited about heading to the banquet.  It will be a chance to meet some people, and see up close what the series is all about.  We’re working on some opportunities that could have me racing in a few ARCA events in 2006,” Lewis said.

Following the season’s conclusion Lewis plans to regroup and plan ahead for the 2006 racing season. Michael Lewis would like to begin a winning and long-lasting career in the stock car industry while continuing to race in the USAC ranks.

Handling Doesn't Stop Lewis At Irwindale on Turkey Night...

By Chris Knight

IRWINDALE, Ca (November 28, 2005) - - Handling woes weren’t going to stop United States Auto Club (USAC) ace Michael Lewis from trying to achieve fame at Irwindale Speedway in this past Thursday’s  65th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix.

Michael rolled into the California track as one of the pre-race favorites for the prestigious event.  As a former winner of both the midget and sprint car series events, Lewis was aiming to add more victories to his already impressive resume.

The night seemed to be starting off well for Michael in the USAC Western Sprint Car Series after qualifying an impressive but not surprising third with a fast time of 16.935 seconds.   “I’m looking forward to the race,” said Michael following time trials.  During the race, Lewis contended for the race lead, but the handling on his No. 40 faded, leaving Michael with an eighth place finish in the 40 lap event.

“Well, that wasn’t the finish I wanted, but we’ll take it,” said the Noblesville, Indiana native.  “The car was good at the start, but we just couldn’t get the car to work the way I needed to.  However, to finish in the top-ten isn’t all that bad, we’ll take it.  Congrats to Dave Steele (one of Lewis’s USAC colleagues) on winning the event, he was good.”

With the Sprint car race in the rear view mirror, focused shifted to concentrating on the main event, the midget series.  Lewis struggled with the handling of his No. 40 in qualifying leaving him starting the feature from 20th after turning a lap of 17.548 seconds.  Pole sitter and NASCAR Busch Series driver Jason Leffler turned a fast lap of 17.160.  Michael raced hard in the second last chance race finishing third, awarding him a berth for the main attraction.

“Well, I used the last chance race as a race run for the feature,” explained Michael.  “I have to come from the back to have a good finish, and that’s our goal.”

Starting 20th was no joke for Michael and he wasn’t going to finish there.  A quick start for Lewis propelled him towards the front of the field.  Despite having another ill-handling racecar, Michael did the best he could with the circumstances racing clean and competitive and turning quick lap times.”   Laps go quickly at the fame-Irwindale Speedway so by the time Michael had broke into the top-ten the race was nearing conclusion.  While Jason Leffler struck triumph, Lewis earned a well-earned tenth.

However, following the race USAC officials disqualified Kyle Nicholas who originally finished seventh, placing him back to 22nd, which moved Lewis from tenth to ninth in the final rundown.

“Well we finished in the top-ten, that’s a good thing,” said Lewis.  “I really hate it for my team, and owner Rick Gerhardt, I wanted to win this thing for them, but again I just couldn’t get the car working the way I needed to, it’s a shame, I really would have liked to won this race.  There’s always next year.”

Western Speed Racing, Wirtgen Group America , Hoosier Tire and Esslinger Engineering will all served as sponsors on Lewis’s No. 40 in both series Thursday night.  “Thanks to all of our sponsors,” he continued.  Without them we wouldn’t be here and while we would have liked to won the races, we walked out of here with the cars in one piece and two-top ten finishes.”

Michael wasn’t the only Lewis clan racing this weekend as Michael’s younger brother Billy was participating in the Ford Focus event, the prelude to the sprint and midget event.  The week had already started off on a downfall for the young gun as his trailer; racecar, equipment and clothing were stolen from their hotel in Las Vegas , Nevada earlier in the week.

Quickly, another racecar was put together for Billy allowing him to participate in the event. Billy qualified 24th for the feature after posting a time of 14.869 seconds.  The younger Lewis also had to compete in the qualifying race where he excelled and posted a very stout fifth place finish.  After taking the green flag for the event, Lewis battled his way towards the front before overheating engines became an issue forcing Billy to park his machine for the night and finishing shotgun on the field, 26th.

“I am really proud of Billy,” said Michael who watched his brother from pit road.  “Considering what he went through this week, he won this event.  I am really proud of him for everything he did in just a short time and I know that we’re going to be battling it out on the track for the win in a very short time.”

As the 2005 year draws to a close, Michael Lewis has recorded stellar stats.  In just 26 races, he captured three fast times, qualified 16 times in the top-five, hustled to six wins, an astounding eleven top-five finishes and an amazing 18 top-ten runs.   Lewis also continues to lead the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the USAC National Midget Series.

Following next weekend’s race, the first annual MOPAR-PRI Sprint & Midget Classic at Orlando Speedway, Michael will head to Covington , Kentucky on December 10th where he has been invited as a guest to attend the 53rd annual ARCA RE/MAX Series banquet.  “I’m really excited about heading to the banquet.  It will be a chance to meet some people, and see up close what the series is all about.  We’re working on some opportunities that could have me racing in a few ARCA events in 2006,” Lewis said.

At the season’s conclusion Lewis plans to regroup and plan ahead for the 2006 racing season. Michael Lewis would like to begin a winning and long-lasting career in the stock car industry while continuing to race in the USAC ranks.

Michael Lewis Looks to Gobble the Fields on Turkey Night at Irwindale...

By Chris Knight

IRWINDALE, Cal  (Wednesday, November 23, 2005) - - USAC ace Michael Lewis is familiar with victory lane at the famed Irwindale Speedway and as the United States Auto Club tour heads to the track this week, Lewis is one of the pre-race favorites for one of the most prestigious events on the 2005 schedule, the 65th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix.

Michael aims to add more first-place finishes to his resume in this event, as the Noblesville, Indiana native has three prior victories on this Thanksgiving night tradition, one in the midget event, while gobbling up two wins in the sprint car race.  This year, Lewis will have two chances to score triumph as he’ll compete in the midget series, the main feature and the sprint car event, the prelude to the main attraction, which Michael thunders in as the defending champion.

“I’m really looking forward to Thursday night,” said a calm Michael Lewis Tuesday evening.  “I’ve won these events before, I’m looking to go back and do the same.  This is a big weekend, not only for me, but my team and family as well.”

There’s another reason why a victory would mean more to Lewis. Michael’s car owner Rick Gerhardt’s father, Fred won the same event fifty years ago Thursday.  “Winning on the night that Rick’s father won the same event would be something I don’t think anyone would ever forget. It would be huge. Rick has done a lot for me and my career and it would be a special way of giving an extra thanks,” explained Lewis who has been competing in this event since 1999.

Western Speed Racing, Wirtgen Group America , Hoosier Tire and Esslinger Engineering will all serve as sponsors on Lewis’s No. 40 in both series.  “Before we turn all of our attention toward the races, I just want to thank all of our sponsors for their support.  We have our goals set high, but I know we can achieve them. We just need a little luck and the wins are ours.”

Before Michael climbs into his cockpit, he’ll cheer on his younger brother Billy who will compete in the Ford Focus Series event, the first event of the night.  The week has already started off on a downfall for the young gun as his trailer; racecar, equipment and clothing were stolen from their hotel in Las Vegas , Nevada earlier this week.

Quickly learning of the tragedy, big brother Michael stepped up to the plate and begun hunting another vehicle for Billy to pilot.  Luckily they found one and have spent a majority of the week getting it ready for racing conditions.

“It’s a real shame what happened to Billy,” Michael spoke dejectedly. “I mean, my family and my brother worked hard preparing his car and to have it taken right from underneath them is just disgusting.  We haven’t had any luck retrieving anything but we were able to get Billy another car and he’ll go racing on Thursday night and do his best.  I am really proud of his accomplishments already and maybe we can have a Lewis-family sweep. That would be cool.”

As the 2005 year draws to a close, Michael Lewis has recorded stellar stats.  In just 24 races, he captured three fast times, qualified 15 times in the top-five, hustled to six wins, an astounding eleven top-five finishes and an amazing 16 top-ten runs.   Lewis also continues to lead the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the USAC National Midget Series.

His more notable wins include: the legendary "Night Before the 500" National Midget Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park, a National Midget race at Pikes Peak, and in the National Sprint Car Series, Lewis won at Toledo, Ohio in July. Out West, driving for the powerhouse Western Speed Racing Team, he won a USAC Western States Midget feature at Pikes Peak as well as two Western Sprint Series races.

One of the most prestigious events on the National Midget schedule is the Copper World Classic at Phoenix, and Lewis won that event in 2001. Also, he has won at the Kentucky Speedway in a midget as well as at the now defunct Nazareth Speedway.

Lewis began his career racing Quarter Midgets, and won over 200 events in those machines, to go along with three National Championships.

In addition to his open wheel success, Lewis was one of only 25 drivers chosen from over 1,700 who submitted entries to take part in Roush Racing's "Gong Show," where he had the opportunity to test a NASCAR Craftsman Truck at the Martinsville Speedway.

The open wheel ace will join a list of esteemed guests that have been on Racing Talk including: Alex Barron, Johnny Benson, Sebastien Bourdais, Helio Castroneves, Erin Crocker, Tracy Hines, Ron Hornaday, Frank Kimmel, Jimmy Kite, Katherine Legge, Ted Musgrave, Oriol Servia, Dennis Setzer, Scott Sharp, Dave Steele, Justin Wilson, and J.J. Roush Racing: Driver X Debuts October 24 on Discovery Channel...

DISCOVERY CHANNEL GRANTED UNPARALLELLED ACCESS TO ROUSH RACING'S COMPETITION TO FIND THE NEXT NASCAR SUPERSTAR

For the First Time Ever, Viewers Will Have an All-Access Pass to the Competition - from the Garage to the Evaluation Room - when ROUSH RACING: DRIVER X Debuts October 24 On Discovery Channel.

Twenty-three tenacious young men. Two determined young women. Two 3,400 pound race trucks with 750 horsepower. Two of the toughest racetracks on the NASCAR circuit. Seventeen judges, including legendary NASCAR team owner Jack Roush, scrutinizing their every move. The prize? One of the most sought-after jobs in racing - a fully-sponsored ride on the Roush Racing team in the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Discovery Channel was granted unprecedented access to this closely guarded competition to show viewers, for the first time ever, what happens on the track - and off - in Jack Roush's "Gong Show." Discovery Channel's weekly series, ROUSH RACING: DRIVER X, premieres October 24 at 8 PM

For the last 20 years, Jack Roush has hosted the Gong Show, a process he used to find such top racers as Robby Gordon and last year's NEXTEL Cup Champion Kurt Busch. Competing race teams and fans alike have always wondered how Jack Roush picks such successful drivers. For the first time ever, viewers will see what goes into the making of a NASCAR superstar on ROUSH RACING: DRIVER X.

"Only Discovery Channel can put viewers into the passenger seat of a race truck at top speed as well as into the evaluation room where the real decisions - and drivers' futures - are made," said Jane Root, General Manager for Discovery Channel. "Each episode will give viewers a never before seen look into what goes on behind the scenes, from the science of the race trucks to the determination of the athletes - in the nation's number one spectator sport."

"Kurt Busch, last year's NEXTEL Cup champion, won our Gong Show in 1999," said Jack Roush. "We plan on finding that next talented driver again this year. Our unique competition was conceived to find a champion, not for TV. This show will be totally genuine and totally Roush.

The grueling three-week contest is a battery of rapid succession tests that challenge competitors' physical and mental strengths, as well as their media savvy and fan appeal. On the track, drivers race on two of the most treacherous tracks on the NASCAR circuit - Martinsville Speedway and Darlington Raceway (known as "The Track too Tough to Tame"). Viewers buckle up for the 150 mph ride with the aid of on-board HDTV cameras.

While drivers must make split-second decisions and endure extreme temperatures inside the vehicle, they must also endure extreme situations off the track, including acting in mock commercials and charming potential sponsors in a surprise meeting to prove they have what it takes to be NASCAR's next superstar.

Viewers will go behind the scenes and hear what Jack Roush and his team of judges, from marketing gurus to NASCAR drivers, really think of the competitors as they whittle down the competition to choose just one lucky winner of the 2005 Gong Show competition.

Michael Lewis Doesn't Win in Winchester; But Presence Known...

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (10-19-05) - - USAC driver sensation Michael Lewis didn’t capture the win in last Sunday’s Rich Vogler Classic from the famed Winchester Speedway, but his presence was sure felt in the garage area.  Lewis, who headed to the event as one of the most recent winners on the tour had high hopes for retaining his victory at the half-mile oval.

The weekend started off in an uncharacteristic fashion as Michael struggled in qualifications posting his automobile in the 15th position, at a time of 15.205 seconds, behind fellow competitor Tracy Hines at 14.045 seconds.  “We’re trying to get a handle on machine,” explained Lewis.  “We don’t like coming out here and being off the pace, but we’re not going to give up and we’ll concentrate on the heat race.”

Lewis competed in the last of three heats events at Winchester .  In the eight lap event, Lewis roared to the front of the pack and captured the victory.  “Well, I hope this is the start of good things,” he said.  “Now if we can back this up in the main feature that would be awesome.”

In the feature, Lewis struggled.  Battling brake problems, in addition to an oil leak problem and a very loose car, Michael would be forced out of contention for the win and instead finish a very disappointing and unusual 12th.

“What can I say?  It just didn’t go our way.  We had a lot of problems during the race and it cost us.  It’s not like our team to run like this and we’re very disappointed in the results.  The only thing we can do is learn from this race and prepare for our next event.”

Lewis will enjoy a few weeks off, before returning to Irwindale , California early next month to test his automobile in preparation for the Turkey Classic on Thanksgiving evening.  Lewis is the defending sprint car champion of the event and odds have many teams and drivers pointing the finger to Michael as the man-to-beat.

“Obviously, the Turkey Classic is a huge deal.  We’re going to test to make sure we come to the track on top of our game, and be better than ever.  I am the defending champion of the sprint car event, and I want to leave there next month with that same title, I’m really excited.”

Following the season’s conclusion Lewis plans to regroup and plan ahead for the 2006 racing season. Michael Lewis would like to begin a winning and long-lasting career in the stock car industry.

12th at Winchester...

Noblesville, IN, October 16, 2005--Michael's hopes of defending his 2003 victory at Winchester Speedway were dashed when he had to settle for a 12th place finish earlier today after fighting an ill-handling car and brake problems during USAC's National Sprint Car Series "Rich Vogler Classic".

He qualified 15th and won his heat race, but was unable to advance more than three spots during the main event.

Michael will begin preparations for his next race which will be the Turkey Night Grand Prix on Thanksgiving night at Irwindale (CA) Speedway. He will be running in both the midget and sprint races that night. He has won the sprint race the past two years, and he won the midget race in 2002.

Michael Lewis Returns to Winchester, Momentum on His Side...

WINCHESTER, IN (10-14-05) - -  After a dominating victory last weekend in Irwindale, California USAC superstar Michael Lewis returns to Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana looking to add another victory to his resume in Sunday’s Rich Vogler Classic.

The last time the USAC tour invaded Winchester back in 2003, Michael Lewis was making his debut at the fast and tricky short track in only his second sprint car race of his career.  He qualified 11th that day and made a lasting impression on the competitors, media and fans as he dashed his way through the field and captured victory.

Lewis has spent the year competing in five different series all united in the USAC association.  The Indiana-native has spent countless numbers of weekends competing in the National Midget Series, Western States Midget Series, National Sprint Car Series, Western States Sprint Car Series and the prestige Silver Crown Series.   This weekend’s event falls into the Valvoline USAC National Sprint Car Series.

The Silver Crown Series is compared to NASCAR’s NEXTEL Cup Series.

“I’m really looking forward to Winchester this weekend,” explained Michael Lewis who will drive for owners Jeff Walker and Darryl Guiducci. “The last time I came here it was a nerve-racking weekend, but we went home with the trophy. It can’t get much better than that.”

No pressure for Lewis to perform well this weekend, but don’t expect the 26-year old to fall for second.  “We’re heading into the race Sunday with one goal on our mind, winning.  Winchester is a very fast track, one of the fastest in the world in my opinion and I love it.”

After scoring his sixth win of the season last weekend, Michael didn’t spend much time enjoying the fame as he hopped on a plane from California to North Carolina and began knocking on NASCAR team’s doors.  “I went to North Carolina this week handing out resumes and talking to owners and crew members.  It’s no secret that I want to be here.  I’m not getting any younger, and I know that I have the talent, I just need that right opportunity.”

In a few weeks, Roush Racing’s prestige race for the “Gong Show” will air on the Discover Channel with Lewis as one of the beginning participants. “It was a shame that I didn’t make it into the top-five, but I thank Jack Roush and the entire Roush Racing staff for giving me a chance.  That was an awesome opportunity and obviously what I’m doing in USAC is starting to trickle into the higher ranks,” added the Noblesville, Indiana native.

Thursday, former USAC driver and fellow colleague of Lewis, Erin Crocker re-announced with car owner Ray Evernham that she will race a full NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule in addition to limited starts in the NASCAR Busch Series and ARCA RE/MAX Series next year.  The team had announced a few weeks ago that Crocker would run for the Busch Series championship in 2006.  “I think Erin is doing it right, and that’s what I want to do.  I don’t want to head into NASCAR and get over my head and take that chance of setting back my career.  Whether I latch into a team with ARCA or the NASCAR Truck or Busch Series it will be an opportunity to give nothing but 150%, the same goals I have here in the USAC Series.”

As the 2005 year draws to a close, Michael Lewis has recorded stellar stats.  In just 23 races, he captured three fast times, qualified 15 times in the top-five, hustled to six wins, an astounding eleven top-five finishes and an amazing 16 top-ten runs.   Lewis also continues to lead the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the USAC National Midget Series.

Following the season’s conclusion Lewis plans to regroup and plan ahead for the 2006 racing season. Michael Lewis would like to begin a winning and long-lasting career in the stock car industry.

Michael Lewis puts broom to Irwindale...

 – By Bobby Gerould –

Baldwin Park, CA. – October 8, 2005. …For all intents and purposes it was over in turn four on lap one. Already the fastest qualifier, and a heat race winner, Michael Lewis started sixth on the grid for the USAC Western Sprint Car 40-lap feature Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway. From the green flag, Lewis powered to the high side of the ½-mile paved oval and passed three cars in turn one. Coming off of turn two he was second, and he had the lead by the time he entered the front chute to complete the first lap! As fans shook their heads in amazement, Lewis drove off, lapping up to tenth in a non-stop race that took all of eleven minutes and 27 seconds to complete.

“That makes four in a row here”, said the happy winner from Noblesville, IN. “I can’t believe how easy they made it for me. The groove here is on the top but when the race started everyone went low.”

While the start was spectacular it only told part of the story of Lewis’ dominance. In the furious 40-laps, Lewis opened up a full straightaway lead over second running Kody Swanson. After two wins at Irwindale Speedway in his USAC Western Sprint Car championship season of 2003, and a win at Turkey Night in `04, Lewis hasn’t been beaten at the Southern California facility in his last four sprint car starts.

“The Western Speed Eagle was good but it wasn’t great”, he said. “I couldn’t get it to turn the way I wanted it to so we will try to improve that on Thanksgiving.” The next and final USAC Western Sprint Car race of 2005 is at Irwindale on Thanksgiving evening as part of the renowned Turkey Night Grand Prix.

Swanson, a high-school Senior from Kingsburg, CA, passed Bud Kaeding for the runner-up spot on lap seven. He finished as runner-up to Lewis, and extended his points lead in the 2005 series title chase. Tim Barber of San Francisco completed the podium finishers. In so doing Barber moved ahead of Mike Murgoitio into second in the series points. Kaeding wound up fourth, driving a second Murgoitio Racing entry. Jeff Gardner of Fresno was fifth at the checkered flag. The top ten was completed by Cody Veenstra, Jimmy Waters, Michael Trimble, Murgoitio, and Rick Hendrix.

Michael Lewis Dominates Irwindale Again...

IRWINDALE, Ca (10-11-05) - -Noblesville, Indiana’s Michael Lewis dominated Saturday’s night USAC Western States Sprint Car Series event from Irwindale, California giving the series superstar an impressive fourth straight victory at the facility for Western Speed Racing.

Lewis, driving the CMKXtreme.com/Wirtgen America Eagle/ Kistler sprint led qualifications on Saturday with a fast time of 16.529 seconds.  With a “pole” to his credit, Lewis was forced to start the first heat event from the tail in eighth.  Lewis didn’t stay there long and blasted his way though the pack to capture the victory in the eight-lap event.

After gunning the victory in the heat, Lewis would once again be knocked off the top position after starting sixth in the main event due to USAC’s inversion procedure.  Much like the heat event, Lewis was dominant and after allowing Bob Beck to lead the first lap, Lewis never looked back after slicing his way through his competitor’s early, taking control on lap two and scoring a popular and dominating victory Saturday evening.  Lewis led 39 of the 40 circuits.

“Man this is awesome,” said a very jubilant Michael Lewis following the race.  “The car was hooked up all night and had some great horsepower.  We came from the back in both races (heat and feature) and won both, I don’t think it could get any better than that.  I thank the team for doing a great job today; we definitely have something to celebrate about.”

Lewis who remains undefeated at the Irwindale oval in Sprint cars is the odds-on favorite for the "Turkey Night" finale hosted on Thanksgiving next month.

While Michael Lewis is continuing to enjoy the success of USAC, he’s looking forward to hopefully enjoying a new venture in auto racing.  “I want to go stock car racing whether its NASCAR or ARCA to start,” added Lewis.  “Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman and Erin Crocker have all paid their dues here in USAC and are great drivers over there.  I’ve been fortunate enough to have one opportunity at Memphis (2003) with Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Busch Series, but I want another shot. I think I belong there, it’s just a matter of proving that.”

Next up for Lewis is the Rich Vogler Classic in the Valvoline USAC National Sprint Car Series at Winchester ( Ind. ) Speedway this Sunday. “I’m looking forward to Winchester ,” Lewis mentioned. “It’s a very fast track, but that’s what I love and I think we have a shot at gathering back-to-back victories.

He set fast time during qualifying in his Western Speed Racing CMKX/Wirtgen/Wesmar-powered machine, won his heat race, and won the feature with a lead of half a lap. This is also his sixth victory at Irwindale and gives him a lot of momentum going into this year's Turkey Night race, which he has won the last two years in the sprint division. He won the Turkey Night Grand Prix midget race in 2002.

Michael Lewis Heads to Irwindale Looking For Another Victory...

.....  ..

IRWINDALE, Ca (10-07-05) - - USAC superstar Michael Lewis continues his busy schedule this weekend with another trip and another race at the famed Irwindale Speedway. Lewis is no stranger to the famed track after setting records, launching results and scoring brilliant victories.

This Saturday, October 8th Lewis, who hopes to follow former USAC competitors Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman and Erin Crocker into the NASCAR world will look to have everyone looking at him and add a sixth victory to his 2005 platter.

“It would be nice to come out of here with a win,” said Lewis, who has one stock car race to his credit driving for Richard Childress Racing at Memphis Motorsports Park in 2003.  “This is a big race and should be very competitive; we’re looking forward to putting our machine upfront and staying there.”

This weekend’s event falls into the Western States Sprint Car Series.

The Silver Crown Series is compared to NASCAR’s NEXTEL Cup Series has seen Michael vault as number one in Idaho earlier this year.

“Well, some may think it’s an awful lot to be racing in so many different series, but I think it’s a challenge and I enjoy doing it,” continued Lewis who drives the No. 40 Wirgten Chevrolet.  “No matter what the outcome is this weekend, we know that we gave it our all.”

Why shouldn’t Michael be a threat? Look at his track record.  In October, 2003 he set a new track record at 16.378 seconds at 109.29 MPH backing it up in the main event and celebrating in victory circle.  In November that year, he qualified second before picking up the pace and adding another victory to his resume.  Last November, Lewis held his own, setting quick time and pulling away to yet another victory in the series.

“I have some great memories at Irwindale,” recalled Lewis.  “Setting a track record is probably one of the coolest things a racecar driver can do.  You’ll never forget it.  When you are able to back it up with a victory it just makes it that more special.”

As the 2005 year draws to a close, Michael Lewis has recorded stellar stats.  In just 23 races, he captured two fast times, qualified 14 times in the top-five, hustled to five wins, an astounding ten top-five finishes and an amazing 15 top-ten runs.  Lewis also leads the Earl’s fast qualifying award for the USAC National Midget Series.

'Gong Show' nears green

MOTORSPORTS EDITOR

Last update: July 31, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH -- The butterflies are building as Roush Racing prepares to put 25 driver candidates through the rigors of what is unofficially called the "Gong Show."

Jack Roush, who looks more the genius every season, started this nerve-wracking talent-search competition several years ago in an effort to develop young talent.

Roush, who has won the last two NASCAR Nextel Cup Series championships with two drivers, will begin the first round of testing Tuesday at stately Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

The roster shows 23 men and two women, who will display their driving talents over the half-mile oval.

"We received over 1,700 applications, and we have narrowed it down to who we feel are the best 25 drivers," Roush said. These drivers will have the opportunity to compete for a fully sponsored ride in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2006.

"The competition will be intense, and I feel confident we will find another great driver to join the Roush organization."

The competition has never had its own name. The "Gong Show" nickname was borrowed from ABC's zany talent show that ran in the late 1970s.

There's another new wrinkle to this year's competition. This year it will be filmed and turned into a 13-part reality show on Discovery Channel.

"The show really will take the best elements from all of the current reality shows and adapt them into a racing theme," Roush Racing president Geoff Smith said. "The format will be a cross between 'Survivor,' 'American Idol' and 'The Apprentice' -- but packed with action and intensity coming at you at 180 mph."

Next comes the good news-bad news element. After two days of competition at Martinsville, 13 contestants will get "gonged" or be eliminated.

The other 12 drivers will travel to treacherous Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on Aug. 15-17 for the second and final rounds of competition.

"Darlington Raceway has been a proving ground for drivers since the day the gates opened in 1950," Darlington president Chris Browning said. "Every superstar in our sport has raced here."

"I can't think of two more challenging tracks on the NASCAR circuit than Martinsville and Darlington," Roush said. "They are both very unique and even seasoned veterans can run into trouble at both tracks.

"Any driver who is able to conquer both of these tracks deserves a ride with the Roush organization."

This is serious business. The "Gong Show" has produced three winners through the years, most notably Kurt Busch, who topped the competition in 1999, earned a truck ride in 1999 and continued on to win the Nextel Cup title last year.

Todd Kluever, of Sun Prairie, Wis., emerged as Roush's tournament winner in 2004 and now drives the No. 50 Roush Ford on the NCTS. He has three top-fives in 14 starts this season...

...The Discovery Channel says the Roush talent search competition series will be broadcast in the fall, and have its own title, so not to offend original "Gong Show" producer and host Chuck Barris.
